ALOR STAR: Kedah Umno are rallying behind its liaison committee chairman, Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal, who said that allegations of "camps" and disunity among its 15 divisions due to bickering were only an outside perception.
Shafie was responding to an article in a Malay daily on Wednesday that had suggested that Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad lead the liaison committee until the divisions were united again.
State Umno liaison committee deputy chairman Datuk Ahmad Bashah Md Hanipah, also denied the allegations.
"What was said about Kedah Umno is untrue. We agree with Datuk Seri Shafie that this is all an outsider's perception," he told a press conference after the postponement of the Kedah Assembly yesterday.
Bashah said there was no internal bickering and there was no problem working with Shafie after he was appointed Kedah Umno liaison committee chairman by Umno president Datuk Seri Najib Razak.
"Maybe the article was referring to our initial reaction to Shafie's appointment. But I think the reaction was normal each time a new leader is appointed.
"All 15 divisions are working as a team. Although sometimes we have different styles or opinions, I think that's normal."
He also refuted the claim that the committee was slow to adjust to the new political balance of power.
"We are working on our strategy with the tagline, 'BN Menang, Kedah Senang' in mind. Don't say we haven't done anything."
When asked to comment on the vacancy of the Kota Siputeh state seat and whether Barisan Nasional has a candidate in mind, Bashah said: "We will wait until the decision on the appeal by Datuk Abu Hassan Sarif and the Election Commission is known on Friday. But if there is going to be a by-election, we are ready."
